Attending A Book Group to Discuss My Debut Novel

Ian 3-1I was kindly invited to attend the Canada Life (UK) Book Group a few weeks ago. Formed three months ago, my debut was their third novel after Donna Tart’s The Goldfinch and Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief. The bar had indeed been set very high. However, unlike the other two authors, I had one singular advantage – I live in the UK and gate-crashed their book group meeting!!

I Sutherland book signing-2Fortunately, Invasion of Privacy was incredibly well received by all of the group members. (Would have been embarrassing otherwise, I’m sure!!) And, in meeting it’s author, the book group readers seemed to very much enjoy hearing about the ideas behind the book, it’s journey to publication and why certain characters were written the way they were. The session culminated in a book signing session and some group photos. I enjoyed it immensely and would definitely be up for doing something like this again.

Let me know if you’d like me to attend a book group you’re part of. Even if I can’t make it in person because you’re in another country or something, these things can be done over Skype.

I’m up for it if you are!

Do you run a book group? Have you ever had an author attend one? Was it a good idea?
